Spencer Nineberg is a believer in the Cambridge Y’s Rock Steady Boxing program. A regular at the weekly sessions in the Y’s boxing gym, she has found a critical outlet to help deal with her Parkinson’s disease, the progressive nervous system disorder that affects movement.
“I love Rock Steady Boxing,” says Spencer about the exercise program that focuses on strength training, reaction time, and balance. “It’s fun and it’s my first contact with others with Parkinson’s. I feel we are all in it together. And best of all it is a really good workout. I always feel so much better afterwards.”
Fellow Rock Steady Boxing participant Julia Huestis agrees.
“There’s something about the classes, where we all show our struggles,” she told Cambridge Community Television. “We all have something that’s hard. It’s really nice to be real. We all get very close. We check in with each other. Rock Steady Boxing is not meant to be a support group, but I feel like it is.”
Partnering with programs like Rock Steady Boxing is just the latest way that the Cambridge YMCA is furthering its mission to meet the needs of the Cambridge community. The response to the program has been so great that the Y is now expanding its outreach to those with the debilitating disease. “Peddling for Parkinson’s” is a new collaboration with Partners Health that will contribute much needed research to determine how to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s.
